Like That: New and Selected Poems

Sybil Pittman Estess has a new book entitled LIKE THAT: New And Selected Poems which was published in December 2014, published by Alamo Bay Press in Austin, Texas. She includes some 40 new poems in this volume, most already published in journals. Then she has selected what she considers are some of the better poems from her other four books of poetry to complete the volume of 125 pages.

"All of the poems are relatively short, and in a sense are accessible to those of us who are neither poets nor have made an extensive study of poetry. Yet brevity does not imply superficiality." - Harrison Kohler, Concho River Review (Read More)

"Sybil Pittman Estess' Like That includes a hefty selection from four volumes, plus excellent new poems of directness and honesty." - Roberto Bonazzi, Poetic Diversity (Read More)

"Read the book for what it promises - and provides - the glory and the grounded. Estess' new poems and poems selected from four previous books welcome us easily to her singular style - intelligent and tender, bawdy and holy." - Sally Ridgway, The Texas Review (Read More)

"Sybil Pittman Estess' new collection speaks with her unique and distinctive voice, in tones that do not fade over the decades. Her poems provide variations on a theme: what it is to be a woman in current and recent eras, from the second half of the twentieth century up until now. Reading the book is listening to a wise woman, even a kind of healer, as she meditates on her world." - Janet McCann, Louisiana Literature (Read More)

"These are poems of witness: of witness to a life fully lived; of witness to birth, friendship, death, and the unforgiving pain of loss; and of witness to a world rife with the wounds of global warming, the violence of guns, yet a world still teeming with transient beauty.  Whether she is writing in form or in free verse, Estess crafts her poems with consummate poetic skill and imbues them with wisdom, insight, and passion.  Estess is a poet who has traveled widely, both geographically throughout the world and intuitively down the pathways of the human heart." - Larry D. Thomas; Member, Texas Institute of Letters, 2008 Texas Poet Laureate

"It is rare to encounter a poet as consistent as Sybil Pittman Estess. Poem after poem is achieved fully, to be appreciated by its audiences. This poetry book is to be savored and saved." - Robert Phillips; Poet, writer, retired Head of Creative Writing, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of English, University of Houston

"Sybil Estess’ poetry is a rich tapestry of women’s experience; her version of “domestic realism” shows through image and is an example what it is to grow up and grow old in this time and place. Her unforgettable pictures and events show us how we invent our lives, how we make our stories up from memory, bits of history, desires. This book is a delight to read and return to." - Janet McCann; Professor, Department of English, Texas A&M University

"These poems offer a moving exploration of love and loss: close and personal, yet never sentimental. Her astute perceptions employ her intimate connection to nature and literature. The poet's insights or epiphanies resonate long after reading her poems." - Miriam Moody Perry; Award-winning English teacher, Middlebury, VT
